Mycelia Monastery: Code of Ethics for Modern Shamans

Our Role as Shamans

At Mycelia Monastery, we embrace the title shaman as a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern science. We are not healers—we are facilitators, guiding individuals toward their own self-healing. Our work integrates spiritual depth, scientific rigor, and ethical integrity to create a safe and transformative space for personal growth.

We recognize that the word shaman carries deep cultural significance and has been misused by charlatans and unethical practitioners. However, we believe that if those who genuinely uphold the highest standards of integrity, wisdom, and care do not step forward to reclaim this word, it will be left in the hands of those who exploit it. Mycelia Monastery stands as a legitimate path for those seeking healing and for those called to become shamans who uphold the principles of responsibility, knowledge, and service.

1. Respect for Indigenous Traditions

  • We acknowledge that shamanic traditions exist across cultures, and we do not claim direct lineage to any one tradition.
  • We honor and respect indigenous wisdom keepers while also recognizing that shamanism is a universal human experience.
  • When appropriate, we seek to support indigenous communities through ethical collaboration, education, and fair compensation.
  • We distinguish our modern shamanic practice from traditional, lineage-based shamanism while valuing and learning from its wisdom.

2. Science & Spirituality: A Holistic Model of Healing

  • We integrate neuroscience, pharmacology, psychology, and trauma-informed care with spiritual practices.
  • We recognize the power of plant medicines and entheogens but approach them with responsibility, intention, and integration.
  • We emphasize an evidence-based approach while honoring the wisdom of direct experience and tradition.
  • We commit to continuous learning and remain open to new discoveries in science and consciousness.

3. Power, Ethics, & Consent

  • We are not the master of you. We believe all of the answers are within, and we humbly offer recommendations and advice when asked. However, we are first and foremost here to listen and hold space for your process.
  • We establish clear ethical guidelines to prevent abuse of power, ensuring financial transparency, informed consent, and professional boundaries.
  • We never engage in sexual relationships with clients, nor do we tolerate any form of coercion or exploitation.
  • We respect each individual’s autonomy—our role is to facilitate, not control their healing journey.

4. Safe & Responsible Use of Altered States

  • We emphasize set, setting, and integration in all work involving expanded states of consciousness.
  • We conduct thorough medical and psychological screening before engaging in any entheogenic or deep somatic work.
  • We ensure participants are fully informed of the potential risks and benefits of their experiences.
  • We provide a safe container for exploration, ensuring physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

5. Integration & Long-Term Well-Being

  • We believe that healing is a lifelong process, not a one-time event.
  • We provide structured integration support to help individuals apply insights from their experiences into daily life.
  • We reject the culture of peak-experience chasing and instead focus on sustained personal transformation with real-world impact.
  • We encourage community support, mentorship, and continued personal development beyond the initial journey.

6. Commitment to Integrity & Transparency

  • We operate with financial integrity, ensuring accessibility without exploitation.
  • We remain accountable to our peers, clients, and community, fostering a culture of trust.
  • We maintain confidentiality and professional discretion in all our work.
  • We continually assess and refine our practices to align with the highest ethical standards.

Final Commitment

We, as modern shamans, hold sacred responsibility for the individuals who trust us in their healing journeys. Our mission is to create an environment where science, spirituality, and ethics unite to support profound, lasting transformation.

By adhering to this Code of Ethics, we ensure that Mycelia Monastery remains a place of wisdom, safety, and empowerment for all who seek healing.
